这诗收录于《圣餐诗歌》，已表明这诗的用途。值得留意的是：这诗出现了一个代名词——我。这种写法在当世的诗非常罕见，那时代的绝大多数圣诗都以教养或经文为内容。华兹这首圣诗却斗胆以个人体会为题，这在当世是非常前卫的举动。祖里安在《圣诗学全书》对《奇妙十架》推崇备至，认为这诗位列英语圣诗四大桂冠。其余三项桂冠是：多马·肯尔（1637-1710）的《我灵速醒歌》、查理斯·卫斯理（1707-1788）的《新生王歌》、奥古斯都·托普雷狄（1740-1778）的《万古磐石》。
